    [1652] Modern reproductionof an N E Shilling

    Obverse: N E
    Reverse: XII

    Weight: 138.3 g (8.96grams) Diameter: 31.3 mm

Comments: This is a modern reproduction of an NE shilling madeby the Boston Mint of Cambridge, Massachusetts. This lead based reproductionis slightly larger and heavier than the silver originals (originals weightabout 72 grains or 4.66 grams and measure within 25-28mm). The pronouncedplanchet striations seen on this copy are not found on the originals. Theobverse of the reproduction has a similar style of lettering to the originalbut with slightly thicker lines. There are 16 surviving NE shillings madewith three different sets of punches. This reproduction appears to be closerto Noe's punch 3 (he called it die 3), illustrated as Noe 10. The cutting(or turning) mark seen on the left half of the obverse does not appear onany original. The reverse has thicker numerals and lacks the serifs foundon the original. Clearly, the word 'COPY' on this reproduction is notfound on the originals.
Provenance: Loaned for inclusion in this on-line exhibition from aprivate collection.

    [1652] Modern reproductionof an N E Threepence

    Obverse: N E
    Reverse: III

    Weight: 32.5 g (2.28 grams) Diameter: 20 mm

Comments: This is a modern reproduction of an NE threepence. Onlyone original threepence survives, now in the collection of the MassachusettsHistorical Society. This reproduction is about the same size as the original. The obverse of the reproduction has a similar style of lettering to theoriginal but with thinner lines and a deeper impression around the letters.Actually it looks closer to the style of the NE sixpence listed as number4 in Noe. The reverse has taller numerals with less pronounced serifs thanthe original. Also, on the original the numerals are placed closer to thetop and slightly more centered than in the reproduction, but they are stillleft of center. The original is holed, with the entry from the reverse sideat about the same spot this reproduction has the s mark. There is no suchmark on the original. The holed original weighs 17.3 grains (1.12 grams).

Great Britain minted all its silver coins in 92.5% (sterling) silver until 1920 when they debased silver coinage to 50% silver content. The missing silver was replaced with manganese causing these coins to tone darkly and in 1920 when several denominations were minted in both 92.5% and 50% silver this toning was the only way to tell the difference in silver content. In 1947 silver was removed completely from circulating coinage and at the same time the silver content of Maundy coins went back up to 0.925. Interestingly for a number of years Great Britain issued both 50% silver threepence coins and coins of the same denomination in nickel-brass (1937-1944). Bullion collectors should also be aware that in 1904 the silver threepence was minted at both 1.3g mass and the regular 1.41g mass.
